Citrus County Florida is one of the most diverse counties in the state. We are known as Florida’s Nature Coast.

There are so many reasons to move to our wonderful area that has become known as “The Place to Be.” Citrus County Florida is approximately 75 miles north of Tampa and 90 miles northwest of Orlando. The communities of Crystal River, Pine Ridge, Beverly Hills, Citrus Hills, Black Diamond Ranch, Homosassa Springs, Citrus Springs, Inverness, Terra Vista, Sugarmill Woods, Floral City are the most prominent. Of course, there are many other notable communities.

More About the "Nature Coast"

Citrus County is a short distance from many of Florida’s hottest attractions and theme parks. Additionally, Florida’s international airports, Orlando and Tampa, are about 2 hours away. Various shuttle services are available within our county. Gainesville Regional Airport is about 80 minutes away. To sum up, Citrus County is close to major attractions without being in the busy hustle of a large city.

The Famous Florida Manatee

The Travel Channel recently named Crystal River as one of the “Top 50 Most Charming Small Towns in America.” Most famously because our area is the “Manatee Capital of the World.” Citrus County, Florida is known for being home to the endangered West Indian Manatee and the only place you can swim with them. The manatees congregate here partly because our area has seven rivers, some of which are spring-fed. Consequently, these rivers drain into the Gulf of Mexico.

Our Florida Waterways

Cool spring water provides a seemingly endless supply of fresh water from the Crystal, Homosassa and Chassahowitzka River. Within our waterways, there are literally hundreds of fresh water springs. These springs maintain a year-round temperature of 72 degrees. Alone, the 30 largest springs pump 600 million gallons of water daily. Attracted to these warm waters, the Manatees make their home here in winter. Manatee season is generally between November and March. As a result, Citrus County is famously a travel destination that attracts thousands of tourists yearly.

Whether you live inland or on the water, Citrus County is a water lover’s paradise sure to delight all! There are multiple areas to fish, boat, kayak and swim. For instance, the northern and eastern sides of the county are bound by the Withlacoochee River. The east by the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes. The west by the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the Withlacoochee State Forest & Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, Citrus County has over 52 miles of gulf coast, 106 miles of rivers and 19,111 acres of lakes. The 30 or so natural springs flow over 600 million gallons of water daily. To sum up, there are over 152,000 acres of its 683-square miles included wildlife parks and reserves.

Fishing in Florida

Citrus County Florida ranks as one of the Top 12 best fishing spots in North America. Aptly named “The Nature Coast,” this area of Florida is teeming with aquatic wildlife. The crystal clear waters offer speckled trout, redfish, snook, cobia, tarpon and a multitude of other species. Likewise, on the other side of the county, are the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes and the Withlacoochee River. Both offer some of the very best large-mouth bass fishing you’ll find anywhere. In short, Citrus County Florida is a fisherman’s paradise.

Scalloping In Homosassa

Florida's Nature Coast, Scalloping Homosassa, FL and Crystal River, FLIn addition to fishing, people flock to our area for another water activity. The hunt for fresh bay scallops. Crystal River, Florida is a top destination for scalloping. So much, it lures thousands of tourists and locals alike to dive into the Crystal Bay. They try to find as many scallops as they can gather. Usually at a limit of 2 gallons per person, per day.

The season falls into the summer months of July through September. Many of the local restaurants will cook up your scallops for a delicious seafood meal. In conclusion, Citrus County is a water lover’s paradise.

Land activities are equally as fun as being on the water. Also along the river and lakes, you will find great Florida biking trails. Here, the communities of Hernando, Inverness and Floral City are home to popular trails.

For instance, The Withlacoochee State Trail offers a 46-mile section of railroad track that has been paved. As a result, the even ground and natural surroundings make it well-liked among cyclists. Above all, the Nature Coast offers great outdoor space for all ages and activities.

Golfing in Citrus County

Another great area, for those who prefer to relax onshore, is the sand hill central ridge. Here, you will find abundant long leaf pine and turkey oak. Nestled in the communities of Pine Ridge, Black Diamond Ranch, Citrus Hills, Terra Vista and Citrus Springs. Additionally, you will also find many beautiful golf courses in this area.

With more than a dozen public golf courses and private golf courses, there are many places for beginners and for the most advanced golfers. Above all, you will find great golf in every direction.

Florida Festivals Year-Round

Another bonus to living on the Nature Coast is partaking in the festivals. Citrus County’s weather allows the community to throw exciting festivals year round. Almost every month, a large-scale event takes place in the major downtown cities. 

Most of the events feature live music, vendors, food trucks, entertainment and more. Whether its firework festivals in the summer or boat parades in the winter, Florida residents enjoy year round activities. In conclusion, there is always something to do in our wonderful community.
